Daniel Shane

I am a graphic designer and educator based in Treaty 1 territory on Turtle Island/Canada. I am interested in how designed systems sanction and articulate authority. My work explores forms that disrupt, counter, expose or reflect on that relationship. I use print, programming, curation, writing, publishing and performance. With students I encourage discovery through making and approaches that ask questions rather than solve problems. Design's eurocentrism and perceived neutrality are always under consideration.

Current

  • During Winnipeg's cold and snowy spring of 2022, I co-founded the working group Mutual Amendment. MA considers the history and the role of anarchist libraries and education and proposes ways to anarchize these institutions today.
  • February–May 2022. I am participating in the School for Poetic Computation's Scrapism residency, exploring computational art on the web with Python and publishing/archives as an expanded creative practice-NY.
  • June 2022. I will be participating in the RGD's Design Educator Conference at Emily Carr-Vancouver, BC.
  • July 2022. In collaboration with Ali Qadeer (Toronto, OCAD), I will be participating in the KISMIF Conference-Porto, Portugal.
  • May–September 2022. I have been selected to participate in the Gornisht Risograph Zine Residency. Works to be published in August.
  • September 2022. I am participating in the Plug-in's Prairie Arts Book Festival .
  • September 2022. During Plug-in's Prarie Arts Book Festival I will be running The Peripatetic Printery, a performance-based, collaborative and partipcatory art project exploring the print shop and publishing as mediums-Winnipeg.

    • Recent

    I particpated in Videopool's year-long Media Artist in Residence. I organized and curated the six-month Indigenous Designer in Residence program, at Winnipeg's School of Art, which culminated in the exhibition no brighter in the middle. I am a recipient of the University of Manitoba's prestigious Falconer Award.
